Today I would like to talk about the conflict between Palestine and Israel.
In 1947, United Nation divided Palestine into an Arab and a Jewish state, and later in 1948, the State of Israel was founded.
The following day the new state was invaded from Syria, Transjordan and Egypt, and by an Arab volunteer force.
After fierce fighting a ceasefire was arranged early in 1949. Between 600,000 and 750,000 Palestinians became refugees, crowded into the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
After The Six Day War in June 1967, Israel occupied the whole land that UN had resolved to Palestinians.
I had been to Israel in the year 2000, when we went to The West Wall in Jerusalem; our guide told us that the big square that we were standing on belonged to more than 200 Palestinian families. Israelis drove them away after The Six Day War; they broke down their houses and burned them.
Since then, Israel had been establishing settlements; there were more than 400,000 Jewish immigrants went to Israel. Palestinians became secondary citizens under the coercion of the Israel Government.
Although the UN had resolved several times to demand Israel to withdraw their troops, Israel continued to oppress Palestinians, especially because they are supported by US.
In 1987, “Intifada” revolt began in Gaza Strip and West Bank, it’s a popular and often violent rebellion in the occupied areas against the Israeli occupation. Palestinian civilians with only rocks and few weapons fought against Israeli army supported by the US, the situation was fierce. In 1988, PLO declared the foundation of the State of Palestine, its land was 22% of the land before 1948, they made a concession to Israel.
Although there were 103 countries recognized Palestine, Israel oppressed them more.
They forced the Palestinians to leave their home, they established more settlements, sealed their occupied areas, closed the borders from time to time.
They deliberately paralyze their economic ability, so that the rate of poverty raised from 21% to 43% in 2001, the unemployment ranged from 50%-70%, there were 70% people who spend less than 2 dollars everyday.
The conflict between Palestine and Israel decreased after the negotiation in 1993, however, Israel was still proceeding their colonial policy toward Palestinians.
In 2001, Shalom was elected as the prime minister of Israel, his attitude toward Palestinians is radical and defiant.
He ordered to murder Hamas in September, which caused 8 deaths, deliberately tried to provoke Palestinians to revenge.
The oppressors call themselves as the messenger of Justice, and the people who fight against the oppressors were tag as terrorists.
Palestinians can not leave their houses, and the injured can not acquire medical treatment, 174 schools are closed, 900,000 children can’t go to school. Palestinians are suffering but most people don’t realize it.
Before I went to Israel, I thought that all the Palestinians are bad people, my impression of them is car-bombing, suicide-bombing, etc. However, when I know more about their history and situation, I feel sympathy for them.
Palestine and Taiwan have something in common, both political statuses are low and oppressed by more powerful countries.
I think power depraves people’s mind, makes people forget about the value of life and love.
Dr. Martin Luther King had said, “ True peace is not merely the absence of tension, it is the presence of justice”.
There won’t be true peace without true justice, the most important thing is to fight against the imperialism ruling Middle East.
I hope that the world we’re live in will be a better one.
